MELASMA

MELASMA

Melasma is a skin condition that causes brown or grey patches to appear, usually on the face. Most commonly appearing on the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin, melasma appears more often in women, particularly during pregnancy, earning it the nickname “the mask of pregnancy”. Those with darker skin tones are also more at risk of developing melasma. While the causes of melasma are unknown, it is most likely the result of overactive melanocytes, cells that create color in the skin, and can be triggered by factors such as sun exposure, hormonal changes, or skin care products.

Melasma is a very challenging condition to treat and manage. At La Mano, we have helped many patients improve their melasma and maintain healthier skin even if a permanent cure cannot be obtained.

Treatments for melasma include:
1. UVA/UVB Sunblock of SPF 30 or higher (preferably zinc)
2. Prescription bleaching cream — hydroquinone.
3. Topical tretinoin or retinol
4. Cosmeceutical bleaching products (arbutin, kojic acid, mulberry)
5. Topical antioxidant products
6. Chemical Peels
7. Laser treatments

Treatment by a dermatologist often improves the appearance of melasma and prevents future recurrence.
